First, the bad. Was QEX a leaking ship? Possibly. After months of low volume of trades (Nov, Dec, Jan), all of a sudden the volume picks up and the price drops quite substantially from approx $1.20 to $0.90 during Feb. Then at the end of the month, this announcement comes out regarding gross margin falling from 14% to 12.6%, which was a downgrade in that respect. That's the bad, QEX is potentially a leaking ship. See the chart below.

Now for the good. The results are about to come out and there has only been a slight decrease in shareprice on very light volume. If the result was bad and the ship is leaking, we'd expect more action. Meaning the ship isn't leaking, or the result is satisfactory at least. So that's good

Perhaps I'm over-analysing it, it's just the market doing what the market does and the timing is just a coincidence. Who knows?

NBT - the other red flag is the entity involved with bringing this company to market (cough cough - same as Cannasouth). No surprises there if it was a leaky ship considering...

One big green flag for me is the backing from Lindsay of Sistema. He obviously sees some value with his investment in this company.

        Interesting facts.
Conor English is a Director of QEX
Conor English is a Director of PMG Pharmaceuticals
PMG Pharmaceuticals are owns of a large ball busting vice
Ball busting vice currently being applied to SML via a cease and desist on Pokeno plant
SML squeaking they are looking for a "Practical Solution".

Anyone enjoy the game "Join the Dots" . I do.

At first I thought this Chinese announcement was bad news for QEX. But the more I think this through, the more I think this could actually be a win for QEX.
China is looking to consolidate suppliers, with the US and Europe being enemy number one. This means more concentration from NZ and Australia, and with established brands, like Munchkin for example. Ie this could actually be a boost for QEX.

I agree. I saw the announcement as either develop internal supply. And if that doesn't work get offshore supply / manufacture organised run /owned by Chinese. Who will obviously need efficient routes back into China.

The chinese pig herd has African swine fever. They are culling pigs at a huge rate. To deal with the protein deficiency, they are culling dairy cows when their time comes. Meaning they will have a dairy deficiency. Therefore they will need to import more product from NZ. There is one company in NZ with majority Chinese Kiwi owners that specializes in the transfer of goods from NZ to China, especially dairy in the form of infant formula. I am well positioned.

The other thing is MM that Chinese culture suggests that Chinese food cannot be trusted to the same extent and overseas food is of a higher quality. The Chinese Government cannot change culture with the stroke of a pen. Changing a culture like that will take a whole generation. Business as usual.

FY results didn't excite the market enough and a lack of buying depth has caused QEX to drop 15% since reporting 2 weeks ago.

It could re-test this year lows in between announcements, but this could be an opportunity for those patient enough.

Disc - Not holding, but was watching for a breakout above $1.20 after earnings

I'm patient. I'll continue holding for a while yet. Could be some useful links yet to be exploited and reflected in financials

Awful chart, better to be out of this one, still plenty of downside to come with no evidence of upside. Sentiment is everything.

If it wasn't a reasonably strong moat NZ exporters would export direct themselves. Its not an easy or cost effective thing to do. So they get QEX to do the door-to-door delivery via daily flight to China and then via their own bonded warehouse (if needed) for them.

I think we Europeans underestimate the value of Chinese "contact's and how that whole network works. As we are seeing on the SML thread people who seem like bit players actually have huge resources sitting behind them that we dont see.

QEX's return on capital employed (ROCE) is substantially higher than others in the industry, which is great to see.

I had originally posted this up on the ATM thread, but it's just as relevant for QEX. NZ milk formula to China up 67%.
